America Is the Poem
for Donald Trump’s
Second Presidential Inauguration
January 20, 2025Rain washes the mud from practice home windows as we barrel by means of the poem of America. From New York to Chicago, I watch it scroll by— body by body and line by line. Rivers and lakes replicate the pale winter sky and hang-out my imaginative and prescient. America, what you have been, and will probably be once more—I see you in silos rising like fists from farmland. America, the land itself says, “Battle!” America, I see you in chipped brick partitions stained with light logos. I see you there, ready to rise from gone-under cities and cities spangled in infinite nightfall. We are able to see you now rising from boarded-up nook bars, baseball fields barbed with weeds, hollowed-out church buildings and factories folded in on themselves like crushed cans reclaimed by the wild. And we see you, and we all know you in ragtag households packed into automobiles to move to church on a Sunday, or to go to a grandfather who remembers warfare and what it means to outlive for love of the nation that survives due to him and his brothers—gone. America, for love, we go on.
It’s a stupendous piece of labor for a brand new day in America. Thanks, Mr. Massey.
