To the editor: I applaud columnist Jackie Calmes for declaring that President Biden’s pardon of his son Hunter was meant to defend him from the specter of malicious prosecution by the incoming Trump administration. (“The backlash on the backlash against the Hunter Biden pardon,” Opinion, Dec. 6)
Nevertheless, Calmes writes that the president lied when he stated he wouldn’t pardon his son. I take challenge with that.
I consider Biden was telling the reality on the time as a result of he anticipated Vice President Kamala Harris to win. He had each proper to vary his thoughts when President-elect Donald Trump gained.
The moralists who rush to judgment appear to see all the pieces in black and white. They appear oblivious to the excellence right here.

To the editor: Hunter Biden was convicted of violating a federal legislation that makes it a felony for “an illegal person of a managed substance” to own a gun.
Hashish is a Schedule I managed substance whose use is federally illegal.
Thus, this legislation robotically strips 2nd Modification rights from anybody who has ever merely ingested a hashish gummy to assist with their sleep. And that individual is topic to 10 years of federal imprisonment in the event that they possess a gun.
Poorly conceived or outdated legal guidelines like this one needs to be rapidly reconsidered in order that they can’t be weaponized by unhealthy actors who would use these legal guidelines in dangerous methods.

To the editor: I’m sorry that Calmes feels Biden lied to all of us when he stated initially that he and his son would settle for the end result of his son’s trials, after which months later he issued a pardon.
This fall, circumstances modified drastically. A person who has been elected to be our subsequent president has stated he would search revenge towards plenty of folks, almost definitely together with Hunter Biden.
Do you suppose that there are circumstances that may trigger an individual to vary his thoughts? If that’s the case, would you label that individual a liar?
Do you suppose that following by on an announcement of revenge will make Trump an sincere man? If pardoning the Jan. 6 rioters is a part of that revenge, then we now have a tragic state of affairs.
I do agree with Calmes that it’s time to restrict presidential powers and produce them into steadiness with different branches of presidency.
