UNITED NATIONS: United Nations Secretary-Common Antonio Guterres on Wednesday (Oct 2) condemned Iran’s missile assault on Israel, telling the Safety Council the “lethal cycle of tit-for-tat violence should cease.”
“Time is working out,” he informed the council.
The 15-member council met after Israel killed the leader of Lebanon’s Hezbollah and began a ground assault in opposition to the Iran-backed militant group and Iran attacked Israel in a strike that raised fears of a wider warfare within the Center East.
“I once more strongly condemn yesterday’s large missile assault by Iran on Israel,” Guterres informed the council.
Earlier on Wednesday, Israel’s international minister mentioned he was barring Guterres from coming into the nation as a result of he had not “unequivocally” condemned Iran’s missile assault on Israel.
In a letter to the Safety Council on Tuesday, Iran justified its assault on Israel as self-defence beneath Article 51 of the founding UN Constitution, citing “aggressive actions” by Israel together with violations of Iran’s sovereignty.
“Iran … in full compliance with the precept of distinction beneath worldwide humanitarian regulation, has solely focused the regime’s navy and safety installations with its defensive missile strikes,” Iran wrote to the council.
Israel’s UN Ambassador Danny Danon on Wednesday rejected Iran’s declare of self-defence.
