Re: “Tom Robbins, 92, bestselling novelist and renegade icon” (Feb. 10, A1):
Again within the mid-70s, we determined to go on an epic journey by hitchhiking throughout the continent to attend Western Washington College in Bellingham. It was a wild, generally scary experience. On the highway, somebody gave us “Even Cowgirls Get the Blues,” Tom Robbins’ second guide.
We realized that Robbins was residing in LaConner, so we hopped into our blue 1961 Worldwide truck and acquired instructions to his home from an area.
We have been standing on his porch, however alas, nobody was house. So, we left a word with our cellphone quantity with an invite to a “woodland feast” at our faculty house.
The following night, the cellphone rang. He known as! We talked to him about his books and his inspirations. We have been intrigued by his character, Sissy Hankshaw, and her freakish, large thumbs that made her a legendary hitchhiker. “Are Sissy Hankshaw’s large thumbs a metaphor of civilization gone too far?” considered one of us requested.
“I need my readers to return to their very own conclusions,” he mentioned. And that was our brush with greatness.
Farewell, Tom, have a superb journey. Don’t overlook to ask Jesus what he considered “One other Roadside Attraction.”
