BUCHAREST: Romania’s central election authority on Sunday (Mar 9) barred far-right pro-Russian candidate Calin Georgescu from operating in Could’s presidential election re-run.
The rejection of his candidacy, which was condemned by far-right celebration leaders as undemocratic, might be challenged on the constitutional courtroom.
Dozens of supporters of the populist Georgescu gathered outdoors the election bureau shouting “Freedom” and briefly tried to pressure their means by means of the safety cordon.
Georgescu submitted his candidacy for the Could poll re-run on Friday amid doubts that he could be allowed to run.
Romania’s highest courtroom annulled the poll two days earlier than the second spherical of voting in December, citing allegations of Russian interference in Georgescu’s favour, which Moscow has denied.
