To the editor: I’m not a younger man and have voted in lots of presidential elections, typically Republican and typically Democrat. I’ve witnessed the far extremes of each events lose, and I really imagine that almost all Individuals are middle-of-the-roaders like me. (“Signposts on the road to authoritarian rule,” Opinion, Feb. 10)
That mentioned, I’ve nice anxiousness that our democracy is underneath menace.
A president can’t simply declare a part of a constitutional modification invalid. Enacted laws can’t simply be ignored. Immigration coverage and price range deficits are main points which have developed over years; they can’t be mounted in just a few weeks by firing authorities employees or deporting folks at will.
The Jan. 6, 2021, assault was actuality. Individuals presently serving in Congress have been trapped contained in the U.S. Capitol that day. Greater than 1,500 folks have been convicted by a jury of their friends or pleaded responsible in reference to the assault. And now we’re to imagine that nobody did something unsuitable. I can’t settle for that an assault on Congress is someway OK.
It has been recommended that the Republicans in energy concern retribution from President Trump. However we’re a democracy, and whereas they could have gained the election, they weren’t given limitless energy.
I’m at a loss to know why Republicans at present can’t bear in mind Abraham Lincoln’s phrases extolling “authorities of the folks, by the folks, for the folks” — and never simply the individuals who agree with Trump.

To the editor: Does UC Berkeley College of Legislation Dean Erwin Chemerinsky imagine that democracy in the USA will finish in the course of the subsequent 4 years?
Trump was elected to decelerate or halt the excesses of the earlier administration, to not set up authoritarian rule. If he goes too far, the folks will resist and vote in somebody with whom Chemerinsky agrees.

To the editor: Oh, America, what have you ever accomplished? You’ve elected a malignant narcissist to be your president, and also you’re effectively in your strategy to shedding your democracy.
In 1933, it took the newly put in Chancellor of Germany Adolf Hitler 53 days to remodel that nation’s democracy right into a dictatorship.
Too many individuals imagine it might probably’t occur right here. In Europe they didn’t imagine it may occur there both. Then it did. My dad and mom noticed the horror in Nazi-occupied Holland.
Our Structure can’t implement itself. Individuals of fine character should uphold it within the face of leaders who ignore it, demand loyalty to themselves, give unlawful orders and fireplace watchdogs.
Listed here are some guidelines for resisting tyranny: Don’t obey upfront, defend establishments, and be able to say “no” to unlawful orders. See the work of students Timothy Snyder and Ruth Ben-Ghiat, and skim the journalism of Masha Gessen.

To the editor: I respect Chemerinsky’s clear itemization of Trump’s shredding of the U.S. Structure, however I imagine he was too well mannered. Residents should awaken to our peril. Trump’s violation of the regulation has slid or will slide us into despotism.
All media should preserve reporting of the assaults on the Structure as their major responsibility. Experiences on the within pages of newspapers are usually not enough.
