The Quincy Institute’s Trita Parsi argues that Iran’s high precedence is to keep away from direct confrontation with the US.
Iran’s leaders have pledged “harsh punishment” of Israel after the assassination of Hamas’s political chief, Ismail Haniyeh, in Tehran. However the US has, in flip, pledged to defend Israel, and Iran will not be in search of direct confrontation with Washington. All this means a reluctance from Iran to retaliate, argues Trita Parsi, the co-founder of the Quincy Institute for Accountable Statecraft.
Parsi tells host Steve Clemons that that is “essentially the most fragile” state of affairs that Iran has confronted in years, as Tehran feels pressured to defuse the state of affairs, no matter trying toothless to its allies.
