California governor Gavin Newsom mentioned that the state plans to sue to halt Donald Trump’s sweeping tariffs, arguing that the duties will price jobs and push up costs.
The lawsuit, which represents one of many first important authorized challenges to Trump’s commerce coverage, will likely be filed in federal court docket in California on Wednesday by Newsom and state attorney-general Rob Bonta.
“President Trump’s illegal tariffs are wreaking chaos on California households, companies and our economic system, driving up costs and threatening jobs,” Newsom mentioned in a press release.
“We’re standing up for American households who can’t afford to let the chaos proceed,” he added.
Newsom, who was elected governor of California in 2018, is considered a possible future Democratic presidential candidate.
