Cook dinner Islands Prime Minister Mark Brown survived on Wednesday (Feb 26) a vote of no confidence in parliament introduced by the opposition over offers he struck with China that strained relations with New Zealand.
Members of parliament voted 13-9 to defeat the movement launched by the Cook dinner Islands United Celebration. Two members abstained from voting.
The federal government holds 14 seats within the 24-seat unicameral parliament whereas the opposition holds 10.
Opposition lawmaker Teariki Heather, who moved the movement to oust Brown’s cupboard, stated: “We need to stand on our personal two toes and make our personal selections, however there’s a giant ‘however’ there.
“Who has supported us through the previous? Our relationship with New Zealand.”
Brown visited Beijing this month to strike a strategic partnership with China spanning schooling, the economic system, infrastructure, fisheries, catastrophe administration and seabed mining.
His dealings set off alarm bells in New Zealand, with which it has constitutional ties, attributable to considerations about China’s rising presence within the area and the potential threats to the nation’s nationwide safety.
